Recasted

Well, Jacob and I made the big trip back to the hospital for the new cast. It was nice to go without having to wait in ER. Although, we were early, and still had to wait almost an hour past our appointment. Thank goodness for the iPad.

The doctor showed me the x-rays again, and let me know that it wasn't a serious break, nor completely uncommon in kids this age. Actually, David did some research and found out that this kind of break is called a "toddler fracture" as many kids break their tibia by walking wrong. Doesn't take much.

So as you can see his new cast goes up to mid-thigh. We were a little surprised at this, but the Doctor did this to reduce the amount of twisting on the broken bone as possible. It irritates the heck out of Jacob as now he can't bend his knee. He had just mastered crawling and climbing with the other cast. Boo. Now he REALLY can't get around. We had several choices in colour, including glow-in-the-dark (which I figured was just asking for bedtime troubles). The blue is nice and still fun.

The cast tech was great, and did a really nice job. The cast is fiberglass, so it is very light. Just today, Jacob was beginning to crawl with it (mind you it kind of drags uselessly behind him) and he did take some solo steps with it. Now that he has figured out that he can walk on it, he will often call for me and then raise his hands saying "walk, walk".

It's going to be a long four weeks, and we worry a bit about the atrophy of his leg muscles under the cast, but I would rather have something easily remedied than a little guy with a sore leg. The pain seems to be abating, he was up only once last night, so we gave him some Advil, and he spent the whole night in his own bed. So we are getting there, slowly.

As you can see, he is doing the best he can, given the circumstances.
