New Skills for Jacob

Here is a list of new things in Jacob's repertoire of things he can do...

- grasp things and bring them to his mouth without dropping them or missing his mouth. (This is one of his most favorite things to do, which leads to a lot of slobbery toys)

- roll around from side to side, and kick furiously (these are the other things he LOVES to do, particularly when he has no clothes on!)

- he can roll from front to back, and back to front...but only when he wants to.

- cry like all get out when he is bopped on the nose or is being held by someone new. He plays strange like Sophia never did. It's a bit of an adjustment having such a mommy focused baby.

- smile ...he smiles often especially at Sophia

- blow wet, bubbly raspberries...for fun and in response to someone doing it to him

- watch intently...either his sister or his parents or whatever action is going on in the room

- egg his sister on with smiles...they are going to be the death of me, those two are. You can already see the mischief in his eyes.

- giggle. Tonight he started giggling loud enough that I could hear him in my room, and he was down the hall. Only his sister has been able to illicit this kind of laughter from him, but it was pure music. Thankfully we got some on video and will post it soon!

Everyday he does something new and amazing. I had forgotten how very cool it is to watch a baby develop in such a way. Such a joy and gift.

Growing, growing, growing

Well, Jacob had his round of four month shots, and was not pleased about the experience in the least bit. Heck, he started crying as soon as I got him in the proper place for the shots. Then he jumped each time the needle pinched his skin, and quickly moved into the silent, open mouthed, I am not breathing, red faced cry...twice. Sigh. It's so hard for both baby and mama...Sophia, on the other hand was sitting happily with David's iPod Touch watching "Eva" (Sophia's term for Wall-E), with no sound. He recovered quickly enough and spent the rest of the day a little grumpy and a lot sleepy.

At this appointment we found out that Jacob:
WEIGHS: 5.30 Kg (11 pounds 11 ounces) --3rd percentile, still
MEASURES: 61.5 Cm (about 25 inches) long --25th percentile --gone up!
and has a HEAD MEASUREMENT of 39.2 Cm --3rd percentile.

So as you can see, he is consistent in weight and head circumference. And has grown four inches in the last two months. He is a long skinny baby who is still easy to carry around.

Video: Sophie on ice

Here's some quick video of Sophie walking across the ice and back. At the end, she takes a bit of a tumble, but she's OK.

Outdoor Rink

Last week, Sophia and Daddy were out walking the trails and sledding the hills behind the house (Regina really is a wonderful place to live in the wintertime) and we decided to take a walk along the frozen creek than runs from our house to the lake in the middle of town. Wascana creek, it's called, and it's where the subdivision we live in (Wascana Heights) gets its name.

Anyway, we were walking the creek all bundled up when we came around a bend and saw that someone had cleared off a good sized ice-rink on the creek. Fantastic! We didn't have skates or anything, but it was quite the adventure regardless. We played on the ice for a good hour or so before we decided that the dog was starting to get a bit cold. Games included walking carefully from one side of the rink to the other; skidding snow chunks across the rink and trying to get them to the other side; sliding a lying-down sophie across the ice; and finally, trying to convince the dog to come onto the ice. The first couple times she ran on without any hesitation, but if you think doggie claws can't get any grip on laminate flooring... well, she didn't venture onto the ice very often after that.

It's so amazing to have such a beautiful open prairie with a gently meandering creek just around the corner from where we live.

Sophie's Faces

Sophie is still drawing faces, every chance she gets, with the little arms coming out of the ears, and the little legs coming out of the neck there...

There is a little finger-painting app on my ipod that she plays with and she makes faces there too. Here are a couple I managed to download...

After she drew this last one, she remarked: "Flying!"

Random Baby Adorableness

NOVEMBER
Just hanging and looking...not too sure what to do with this house toy yet....

Precursor to the Osborne finger suck. Not getting the whole hand coordination thing yet.

DECEMBER
A little Mommy cuddle

One of Jacob's favorite sleeping positions (with anyone but Mom)

Beware: the kid's a drooler!

Aspiring Superman

The beginning of a grin

JANUARY & FEBRUARY
Now that Jacob's a little more mobile (can move by rolling back and forth on his side), his favorite thing to do is roll out of the house....that is after he has spent several minutes grabbing at toys while his feet stick out the window.

Osborne finger suck: achieved!

Also achieved: the holding up of the head while in stomach position. Look at how strong that kid is!

Jacob is happiest when sitting up and watching the world. He makes good use of the Bumbo seat we had for Sophia. He loves sitting up and smiling at us all.

"Hey, Baby" --looking suspiciously like Uncle Todd....

Peek-A-Boo

Gimme That!

Our easy smiling boy. Check out the cool robot shirt---Daddy's boy to say the least!
